The environmental building we have for turnings and borings with oil residue. It’s a special feature to our yard to keep scrap metal that is contaminated from hurting the environment, like oils that are on the scrap metal. It keeps the groundwater, rivers, and streams free from getting any oil contamination into them.
In 1902, 123 years ago, Charles Buckman founded the family business with nothing more than a horse and a wagon. Industrial scrap was loaded into barrels, then unloaded and transferred into railcars by hand for transport to the steel mill.
Charles’ son, Maurice, carried on the business until 1956, when his son, George, became actively involved. George began working at just 13 years old, driving the company truck to make pickups and deliveries.
In 1974, George expanded the business by acquiring a scrapyardin La Salle. Around this time, the company began using old-style cable cranes to load and unload scrap metal. In 1980, he continued expanding by purchasing a facility in Mendota.
George’s son, Arnold Buckman, joined the business in 1984. Since then, Arnold has significantly modernized and grown the company. He opened a new facility in Ottawa, extending service to Marseilles, Seneca, and Streator. He also introduced state-of-the-art Caterpillar hydraulic cranes at all locations, replacing the older cable cranes. Additionally, the company installed brand-new Caterpillar cranes outfitted with 1500-ton LaBounty shears, capable of cutting beams and heavy material up to approximately 1½ inches thick.
In 2021, Arnold moved the La Salle location to a new, state-of-the-art facility at 85 Chartres St., where he launched the first drive-thru scrap recycling facility in Northern Illinois. Now, families can conveniently drive in, unload their materials, get paid, and exit, all without leaving their vehicles or being exposed to the weather.
Today, Buckman Iron & Metal Co., Inc. is proudly entering its fifth generation, with Arnold’s daughter, Lilah Buckman, now actively running and managing the business, continuing the family’s legacy of innovation and service.
